Strasbourg, Alsace 7 - 11July

Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, is just a short train ride from Colmar and is once again a mixture of Frence and German traditions. It is also one home of the European Parliament.

The apartment we are staying in, another timber framed building, is an old convent. It is right in the centre of the UNESCO World Heritage area of Strasburg, the Grand Ile.

Bill outside the apartment courtyard gates.

The apartment's terrace.

Out on the street.

More timber framed buildings.

A timber framed restaurant.

The carved Maison Kammerzell in the Cathedral Place.

One of the lovely flower decorated bridges.

Dr Albert Schweitzer played the organ at the Saint Thomas church in Strasbourg.

Of course we had to do the boat tour, a pleasant loop cruise.

The boats float along the Ill River and along the many canals.

Floating through the canals of La Petite France, where artisans plied their trades (tanners, millers and fishermen) in medieval times.

The 16th century House of the Tanners looks beautiful with all it's geraniums.

Waiting at a lock.

The 17th century Barrage Vauban

The picturesque 13th century Ponts Couverts (covered bridges).

The Place Gutenburg, with the statue of Johannes Gutenberg (1398 –1468), who lived in Strasbourg. He was a blacksmith, goldsmith and printer who introduced printing to Europe with his invention of mechanical movable type.

Pontonniers International High School.
