We drove out of Yosemite into the scenic Southern Gold Country area. Highway 49 passes through many historic mining communities and is named for the 49ers, the wave of immigrants that came here for the 1849 gold rush. First stop was Parrots Ferry Bridge.
Most of these towns still have old historic Wild West like centres, now trendified. This is Sonora.
The Columbia State Histotic Park. In 1945 the Californian Government turned the whole town of Columbia into a state historic park, basically a living museum of preserved 1859s shops, restaurants, houses and hotels.
The fire station.
Looking down Main Street. Not many people here today.
Hotel Leger at Sutter Creek.
Sutter Creek street scene. The raised, arcaded walkways and high balconied buildings are excellent examples of 19th century architecture.
Our hotel was on the Californian side of Lake Tahoe, with the ski slopes behind.
Spring has just arrived here. Lovely weather.
Beautiful Lake Tahoe. The Mountains surrounding it are still covered in snow. Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in the USA.
Harbour, South Lake Tahoe.
The beach at South Lake Tahoe.
Bill, aka Lyman Whitaker, has been at it again.
Ski Run Harbour
Some of the beaches on the lakeside are private and completely closed to the public.
Bill has a yarn with Mark Twain, who set some of his stories around these parts.
Doggy bagging an enormous and delicious Mexican meal to warm for tomorrow night's dinner.
Cave Rock Tunnel running through a mountain on the Navada side of Lake Tahoe.
View from Cave Rock Point.
Bill at a view point.
The beautiful Emerald Bay.
Snow behind Emerald Bay.
A Steller's Jay joined us for a picnic lunch.
We did the trail up to Eagle Falls.
Snow trail. Thank goodness for my trusty walking pole.
And so the sun sets on our stay in Lake Tahoe.
