Life in Hue

We soon fell into the relaxed pattern of life in Hue.

Our morning started with a wander up the road to the local cafe for breakfast.

There are lots of these lovely outdoor cafes in the old town.  We always ordered Vietnamese drip coffee with condensed milk and ice.  They always bring copious jugs of cold tea as well.

They don't sell food at the cafes so Alexander goes out to his favourite lady on the corner to buy delicious pork buns and coconut cakes and brings them back to the cafe.

Alexander hired us bikes for the week, so after breakfast we would head off for the days exciting and hair raising adventure to see the sights.  Sadly there aren't really any road rules and motorbikes fly at you from all directions.  Absolutely nobody has worked out the meaning of pedestrian crossings, let alone traffic lights, and riding the the correct side of the road is definitely not sacred.  Roundabouts!!  Lets just not go there!!
Alex and Mary ride around like professionals, especially Mary who has no fear whatsoever.  If you want to make a turn you just drift in front of the traffic and hope like mad they miss you.  We hopped off our bikes and walked across large intersections sometimes.

Before long it's is time for the delicious feast called lunch.

After lunch it's time for resting and recovering from the heat and the terrors of life on the road, in Alexander and Mary's cool lounge.

Five o'clock so it must be time for a cool drink.  This is at a beautiful cafe in the wall of the Citadel.
Tess, a very good friend of Mary and Alexander joins them for many meals.  Normally her partner
Daniel would also be there, but he is in Germany for a couple of weeks.  It was lovely to be able to spend time with her too.

This is the cafe, taken from inside the citadel.

Dinner time.  Here we are by the river eating frogs legs, pipes and various other delicacies.
Did we mention that these delicious meals never cost more than four dollars each, including drinks.
