Aphrodisias

Aphrodisias is a beautiful well preserved classical city and was a lovely surprise. It was built by successive settlements from around 5000 BC. Turns out there are more Ancient Greek ruins in Turkey than in Greece and more more Ancient Roman ruins in Turkey than in Italy.
An sarcophagus amongst the huge collection of remains in the grounds.

A Corinthian column.

The Temple of Aphrodite.

Underneath an arch.

A 270 metre long stadium, with 30,000 seats.

The Odeon, a small theatre for performances and meetings.

Elle sang for us again.

The seats were all decorated with lion's feet.

Backstage - the door into the green room?

The Agora.

One end of an enormous pool - around 250 metres long.

A white marble theatre with seating for 7000 people. The seats are individually labelled.

The stage area.

Inside the museum there are many precious remains from the site.

That night we stayed in a lovely hotel in Kusadasi, right on the Aegean Sea.

We wandered along the waterfront before dinner.

There were many small boats moored along the shore and many apartment buildings and hotels on the shore.

The Turkish flag flies proudly at dusk.

Sunset over the sea. This is also a big port for cruise ships.
