Asheville, North Carolina 15, 16 May

Asheville is a pretty town just off the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It seems to be inhabited by wealthy retirees and mystical hippies - some what like Glastonbury in England.

These protesters are Veterans for Peace.

The City Hall.

Interesting buildings abound.

As do interesting statues.

The Biltmore Estate is in Asheville. This is America's largest house, built by shipping and railway heir  George Vanderbilt and completed in 1898.  Unfortunately we couldn't take photos inside, but it was very impressive - even had a private bowling alley.

Bill posing with one of the lions at the entrance.

The helix staircase.

The view over the 8000 acre estate.

Formal Gardens designed by the father of American landscape architecture, Fredrick Law Olmsted, the same person who designed Central Park NY.

Garden walk.

This is the most colourful  butterfly we have seen so far.

Antler Hill model farm on the Estate.

Hungry baby barn swallows.

Calamity Jane rides again!
