After our wonderful Utah and Arizona trip, we flew to Manhattan for a few days so Bill could visit colleagues at Kansas State University. He was wined and dined in style and ended up seeing everyone from the President (Vice Chancellor) down. Manhattan turns out to be quite a nice green town and it even has rolling hills, although head a few miles out of town and you hit the prairies.

The Gateway to Kansas State. It is a large university, almost 150 years old, with 23,000 students. All the buildings are built from local limestone, which makes them very attractive. The building on the right is a kind of castle shape.

Everything in this town is purple - the uni colour. Everyone wears purple and many of the adds and shop signs are purple. Bill wore a purple tie! |
|
Some of the number plates are purple and I saw a few purple cars. (By the way, front number plates are not required in many states).

|
Even the flower plantings are purple!

The Court House, also built with local limestone.

A pioneer house. |

These patriotic wooden houses, flying the flag, are quite common. |

Another typical wooden house, but not patriotic.

Manhattan rules - no guns in Kansas State University buildings, and none in the shopping mall!! |

Kinsly and Subi took us on a great tour. We went into the upmarket suburbs to follow the destructive path of a tornado which ripped through Manhattan a couple of years ago. We also went out of town to see this dam and a lovely recreation area. That evening we went to John and Engrid Lesley's home for dinner. |
Hope you took your purple shirts to the US so you could look like a local
