Jamestown and Yorktown

The Jamestown Settlement is another living history museum located near the site where, in 1607, the first small group of 104 English men and boys formed a settlement.  Each of these historic places have very informative Information Centres with wonderful films, (as did each of the National Parks we went to), so we are learning a lot. This is a full scale reproduction of the fort built by the first settlers.

This rather wild looking enthusiast explained the weaponry used.

Here's the medical man with his weird and wonderful potions, some of which were effective, although they didn't really understand the science behind it.

The houses were timber and clay.

Replicas of the English sailing ships that brought the settlers.

Reproduction of the Powhatan Indian village in the area.

Yorktown, a charming place overlooking the York River.

This is the continental Army Encampment in the Yorktown Victory Centre Museum.  The Yorktown Battlefield is the site of the final major clash of the American Revolution, which put an end to colonial rule in America.

A demonstration of musket firing.
