Trips out of Lucca

We took several day trips from Lucca. The first was by bus to Torre del Lago Puccini and then on to the beach at Viareggio. This is Lago di Massaciuccli near the town of Torre del Largo Puccini.

Here we visited the Museo Villa Puccini, by the lake, where he went to indulge in his passion for shooting water birds and other defenceless creatures.

Looking over the lake.

We continued on by bus to Viareggio to see how Italian's spend their beach holiday. Not too impressive.

Still not impressed. They are mainly private beaches run by clubs, like Nicholas frequented when we were living in Rome.

The town does have some nice Art Nouveau buildings, or Liberty style as they call it in Italy. This is the 1920's Gran Caffe Margherita.

Another trip, by train this time, was to the Renaissance town of Pistoia. This is Pistoia's Cathedral di San Zeno.

Over the entrance.

The main piazza was a good meeting place for dogs.

This barometer was inside a bank.

More of the bank.

The interior of government offices.

Close up of the wall art.

Amazing banded marble surrounds the 12thcentury church of San Giovanni Furorcivitas.

The beautiful pulpit inside.

A carved marble holy water basin by Giovanni Pisano featuring the three virtues.
