First day on the bikes - heading for Sotosalbos.

The first stop was San Ildefonso, and the magnificent palace and gardens of La Granja.

Bill and Dan looking for somewhere to park their bikes.

Beginning in1728, King Philip V created a summer palace and gardens modelled on the Palace at Versailles.

Piece of fruit anyone?

The gardens cover more than 1,500 ha and has 26 sculptural fountains representing themes from classical mythology.

Further along and the countryside was very dry, but it really felt like we were in Spain.

The roads were all undulating and some were just plain hilly. Still, lots of up means lots of downs. That's what we kept telling ourselves!

The stations of the cross were lined up outside the churches in this part of Spain.

We stopped to chat to this delightful old lady and her son, who were herding their cattle.

After around 50 kilometres of pretty tough riding we arrived at out hotel in Sotosalbos absolutely shattered, but proud of our achievements. It was becoming obvious that this was going to be the hardest ride we have done to date.  The weather was quite hot, but it was a dry heat, so bearable.

Our hotel and it's owners were delightful.

This was our room.

The view from the room. There are only 130 inhabitants in this town.

The town’s beautiful Romanesque village church, Iglesia de San Miguel.
